How We Help People Take Their Next Step
Most people don't take a spiritual step in a vacuum — they take it in an environment that feels safe, warm, welcoming, and trustworthy. And you help create that environment. Here are four practical ways we help people take their next step.
1. Make people feel welcomed and valued
Before anyone opens their heart spiritually, they open it emotionally. A smile, a quick conversation, someone learning their name — small moments that lower a person's guard. This isn't only the greeters' job; we want a culture where everyone feels welcomed. So look beyond your own friends: when someone looks lost, help them; when someone's sitting alone, start a conversation; when a parent seems overwhelmed, ask how you can help.
2. Remove barriers and distractions
People arrive carrying worries, questions, stress, and practical obstacles — not knowing where to sit, feeling unsure about dropping off their kids, a glitch during worship. Every time you remove a barrier — checking in a child, running a camera, adjusting sound, directing traffic, helping someone find a seat — you clear a path toward Jesus. Barrier removal is spiritual work.
3. Reflect the heart of Jesus
Long before someone hears a sermon, they hear your tone; before they're moved by worship, they're moved by your kindness. When you're patient with a child, gentle with a frustrated parent, and joyful when things don't go as planned, you show people what Jesus is like. In fact, people often decide whether they'll return based on how they're treated before and after the service — on the walk from the parking lot to their seat.
4. Build trust through excellence
Trust is the foundation of spiritual openness. Excellence isn't perfection — it's preparation. Showing up on time, consistency, following procedures, and clean, safe environments all build trust. And when people trust the church, they're far more willing to trust Jesus.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
