A Heart That Wants to Give to God
“Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.”
2 Samuel 7:2
David has finally arrived. The wars have quieted, the palace is built, and he is living in comfort. But instead of settling into ease, David looks around and feels a holy discomfort: God's presence is still in a tent while he lounges in cedar.
This is a beautiful moment. David isn't asking what more he can get; he's asking what he can give. His dream to build a temple is genuinely God-honoring. But notice what happens next — Nathan the prophet says, “Go do it,” before anyone asks the Lord. Even good, God-shaped desires need to be surrendered to God's actual will. The most dangerous “yes” is often the reasonable one that everyone around us applauds.
Practice
Where has God given you a season of rest, margin, or blessing? The question isn't only “How do I enjoy this?” but “How can I use this for God?” At the same time, name the “good idea” you're excited about right now — the plan, the purchase, the direction — and ask honestly: have I actually brought this to the Lord, or only to people who will tell me what I want to hear?
Prayer
Father, thank you for the good gifts you've placed in my life. Give me David's holy discomfort — a heart that looks for what I can give you rather than only what I can get. Before I run ahead with my plans this week, teach me to bring them to you first and to want your will more than my own. In Jesus' name, amen.
