Build houses, plant gardens
“Build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce.”
Jeremiah 29:5
God's first instruction to people in a hard place is not "endure it." It is "build something."
False prophets were telling the exiles this would be over in two years, so live out of a suitcase. God says seventy years, so pick up a hammer. Building a house and planting a garden are both slow commitments. A fruit tree planted in Babylon would not feed you for years. God is telling them to invest in a place they did not choose, on a timeline longer than their patience. Refusing to unpack feels like faith. Usually it's just resentment with good posture.
Practice
Pick one thing today that you've been holding off on because you weren't sure you'd stay. Join the group. Learn the neighbors' names. Sign up for the ministry team. Plant the actual tree. Do one thing today that only makes sense if you're still here in five years.
Prayer
God, I've been living out of a suitcase in a place You told me to build. Forgive me for holding back. Show me one thing to plant today, and give me the patience to wait on the fruit. Amen.
