Fix Your Eyes on the One Who Finished
“…let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:1–2
David served his generation, died, and decayed. But there is a greater Son of David — Jesus — who was raised and did not decay. He didn't just finish his generation's work; he finished the work of salvation once and for all.
Here is the gospel that holds this whole week together: you don't finish well by trying harder. Every other day this week called you to surrender, to invest, to serve — but none of that is the engine. The engine is Jesus. He ran the race perfectly, endured the cross, and sat down at God's right hand. We finish well only by keeping our eyes on the One who already finished.
Practice
Look back over this week's devotions. Where were you tempted to make “finishing well” about your own effort? Today, shift your gaze. Name one area where you've been striving in your own strength, and consciously hand it to Jesus. Then run — not to earn his love, but from it.
Prayer
Jesus, you are the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. I cannot finish this race on my own strength, and I'm done pretending I can. Thank you for running it perfectly, for the cross, and for the empty tomb. Fix my eyes on you today. When I stumble, lift my gaze back to you, and carry me all the way home. Amen.
