Devotion

Four words that change everything: "I have sinned"

David responded to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord.

2 Samuel 12:13

No excuses. No spin. No blame. Just four honest words: "I have sinned against the Lord."

David is the king. He had the power to deny it, to silence the prophet, to manufacture an excuse — the way we're all tempted to do when we're caught. Instead, he comes clean. Compare him to Saul, who, when confronted, made excuses and protected his image (1 Samuel 15). The difference between the two kings isn't that one sinned and the other didn't — both fell. The difference is what they did when the truth caught up with them. Real confession stops managing appearances and simply agrees with God about what's true. It isn't groveling to earn forgiveness; it's honesty that opens the door to it.

Practice

Confession gets specific. "God, forgive me if I've messed up somewhere" isn't confession — it's a dodge. Name it. Today, tell God plainly the thing you've been softening or avoiding: "I have sinned, and here is what I did." Then, just as David needed a Nathan, consider telling one trusted person too. Sin loses its grip the moment it's spoken in the light.

Prayer

Father, I've spent enough energy hiding, excusing, and managing my image. Today I just want to be honest with You. I have sinned — and I bring the very thing I've been avoiding into the light before You now. Thank You that I don't have to clean myself up before I come; I only have to come. Amen.
