Grace Changes Everything
“Look, I'll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I'll pay back four times as much.”
Luke 19:8
The man who got rich cheating people is suddenly giving half of it away — and paying back everyone he wronged, four times over.
Notice the order. Zacchaeus isn't doing this to earn grace; he's doing it because he's already received it. Jesus never demanded a cent. Grace came first, and it changed everything. As David Guzik put it, “Jesus went in to be a guest with a man who was a sinner, but He came out from the dinner with a saved man.” We don't clean up to get close to Jesus — we get close to Jesus, and He cleans us up.
Practice
Where are you still trying to clean yourself up to earn what's already yours in Christ? And on the other hand — where has grace genuinely changed you? Name one piece of fruit you can thank God for. Let gratitude, not guilt, be the engine of your obedience this week.
Prayer
Lord, thank you that your grace isn't a reward for my cleanup — it's the reason for it. Free me from trying to earn what you've already given. And let your grace keep changing me from the inside out, until my life gives it away like Zacchaeus did. Amen.
