He Called You by Name
“Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, because today it is necessary for me to stay at your house.”
Luke 19:5
Out of the whole crowd, Jesus stops. He looks up. And He calls the least deserving man there by name — then invites Himself over before Zacchaeus changes a single thing.
Notice what Jesus doesn't say: “Clean up your act, quit that job, pay everyone back, and then I'll come over.” He doesn't address the sin first; He starts the relationship. He calls the man not by his label — “sinner,” “tax collector” — but by his name. That's how good our Savior is. He didn't wait until you had it all figured out either. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This is the order every time: we don't clean up to get close to Jesus; we get close to Jesus, and He cleans us up.
Practice
First, receive it: Jesus knew your name and came to your house before you had anything together. Sit in that for a minute. Then extend it: who in your life have you been waiting to “clean up” before you'll really move toward them? What would it look like to start the relationship first, like Jesus did?
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for calling me by name and coming to my house before I deserved it. I didn't clean up first — you came, and then you changed me. Help me offer that same grace to someone else this week: relationship before repentance, love before lecture. Amen.
