Investing in What You'll Never See
“So David made lavish preparations for it before his death.”
1 Chronicles 22:5
David will never walk through the temple doors. He won't hear the songs or see the sacrifices. Yet he spends the rest of his life gathering stone, iron, cedar, and gold so his son can build it.
This is what surrender looks like when it's alive, not passive. David can't build the temple, but he can prepare for it. He pours his final years into a work whose payoff he will never personally enjoy. That's the heart of investing in what lasts: laboring for a harvest you may never see, because it is God's work and not about your name.
Practice
What are you building that outlives you? Be specific. Is there a child to disciple, a younger believer to mentor, a ministry to serve, a gift to give — something that plants seeds for a harvest decades away? Pick one “temple” you won't personally get credit for, and make a lavish preparation toward it this week.
Prayer
Lord, keep me from wasting my life on things that don't last. Like David, help me pour myself into what will outlive me — the people and the mission that matter to you. I don't need to see the finished building or get the credit. Let me be faithful with my part and trust you with the harvest. Amen.
