Seek the welfare of the city
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile.”
Jeremiah 29:7
God did not say tolerate Babylon. He said seek its good.
The Hebrew word behind "welfare" here is shalom, which means far more than the absence of trouble. It means wholeness, flourishing, things working the way they should (Strong's H7965). God is telling captives to actively pursue the flourishing of the empire that captured them. That is stunning. He is not asking them to approve of Babylon's values. He is asking them to bless Babylon's people. Their calling was never to withdraw and never to blend in. It was to live openly for God right in the middle of it, for the good of everyone around them.
Practice
Your two easy options today are to complain about your community or to hide from it. Pick the third one. Do one concrete thing that makes your corner of Walton County better this week. Take a meal to the family in crisis. Sign up at the school. Tip generously and learn the server's name. Pick up the trash on your street. Small and real beats big and imaginary.
Prayer
Lord, I have criticized this place more than I have blessed it. Forgive me. Show me one way to make my neighborhood better this week, and let someone be glad that Your people live here. Amen.
