Sought and Sent
“Today salvation has come to this house… For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 19:9-10
Jesus names why He came: to seek and to save. And that word “seek” is the very same word used for Zacchaeus “trying to see” Jesus back in verse 3.
Zacchaeus thought he was the one doing the seeking that day. But really, Jesus had been seeking him the whole time. Zacchaeus climbed a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus; Jesus climbed down from heaven to go get Zacchaeus. That's the gospel in its truest form. And here's the turn: once we've been found, verse 10 becomes our job description. He came to seek and save — and now He's handed the seeking to us.
Practice
Two things to carry out of this week. First, receive it: you were sought before you ever went looking. Rest there. Second, respond: whose name is on your card — the empty chair in your life? Take one concrete step this week. Pray for them by name. Notice them. And when the moment comes, say the simplest, most powerful thing you can: “Come and see.”
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for seeking me before I ever sought you. You climbed down from heaven to bring me home. Now send me. Put the name on my heart, give me courage to move toward them with love and no agenda, and use me to help them see that they're not out of reach. Amen.
