Devotion
Thankful for You
“I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you, always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer.”
Philippians 1:3-4
Paul is in chains, waiting on a trial that could end his life. His first written words are thank you.
Letters in Paul's day opened with a short, formal thanksgiving. Paul's is long, warm, and personal. Every time he remembers the Philippians, he thanks God, and he prays for them "with joy." Nothing about his situation improved; he is still chained to a Roman guard. What changed was his focus. His joy wasn't rooted in his circumstances; it was rooted in what God was doing in people he loved. That's the seed of the whole letter: joy that chains can't touch, because it looks at God's work in people instead of at comfort.
Practice
Think of three people who shaped your faith — a parent, a youth leader, a friend who told you the truth. Pick one and contact them today. Tell them specifically what God did through them. Not "thanks for everything." Name the moment, the conversation, the sacrifice. Gratitude that gets spoken changes two people at once.
Prayer
God, you have filled my life with people who pointed me to you. Thank you for each name that just came to mind. Make me quick to say it out loud while they can still hear it. And grow in me that same joy, the kind that looks at what you are doing in others and gives thanks. Amen.
