The lie that what you are is not enough
“No! You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman. “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:4-5
There is a lie underneath the lie.
The serpent makes two moves. First he denies the consequence. Second, and this is the one that does the real damage, he tells her God is holding back something she needs in order to be complete. The message is simple: what you are right now is not enough.
Practice
Take the sentence you wrote down yesterday and put one question to it. Is this telling me I did something wrong, or is it telling me I am something wrong?
Prayer
God, I have believed that I am not enough and that You are holding out on me. That is not true about You. Thank You that You have never withheld anything I actually needed. Teach me to tell guilt and shame apart. Amen.
