The One-Sentence Life
“For David, after serving God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and decayed,”
Acts 13:36
Centuries later, the Holy Spirit sums up David's entire life in one sentence: “he served God's purpose in his own generation.” Not “conquered giants.” Not “greatest king.” Just this.
There's no mention of David's résumé — the battles, the crown, the psalms. God's “obituary” for David is simply that he served God's purpose in his own time and then rested. That is the definition of finishing well: not a perfect life, but a faithful one; running your leg of the race and handing off the baton.
Practice
If God wrote a one-sentence summary of your life so far, what would it say? And what do you want it to say? You are still holding the pen. Name one thing this week that would move your sentence closer to “served God's purpose in their generation” — and take that step.
Prayer
Lord, I don't want to be remembered for the wrong things. More than a full résumé, I want a faithful life. Let it be said of me that I served your purpose in my generation. Show me the next faithful step, and give me grace to take it while I still can. Amen.
