The Quiet Seeker
“He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.”
Luke 19:3
Behind the reputation was a surprise. This “not in church” man — the traitor, the outsider — was trying to see who Jesus was.
Everybody assumed a man like Zacchaeus couldn't possibly care about God. But Luke pulls back the curtain: he was seeking. Here's what we get backward all the time — we assume that because someone isn't in church, they must not be interested. So we don't invite them. We don't even notice them. We decide it's over before it ever starts. But some of the most far-off people you know are quietly climbing trees, wrestling with God-questions they'd never say out loud, just waiting for someone to notice.
Practice
Think of someone far from God. What if their absence isn't apathy but a crowd in the way — busyness, past hurt, a bad church experience, shame? This week, retire the assumption that they're not interested. Start watching for the small signs that they're actually seeking.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for assuming that distance means disinterest. Open my eyes to the quiet seekers around me — the ones climbing trees where no one's looking. Make me the person who notices. Amen.
