Devotion
The room was full, and the person who needed Jesus most was still outside
“When he entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and he was speaking the word to them.”
Mark 2:1–2
Before anybody gets healed, Mark tells us about a crowd. The house is packed wall to wall. And that detail is not filler — it's the first obstacle in the story.
Capernaum was Jesus' home base, a fishing town on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee. Houses were small and single-story, so "no more room, not even in the doorway" means people were spilling out into the street. Notice what's drawing them: Jesus "was speaking the word to them." This is a good crowd doing a good thing — listening to Jesus teach. But in the very next verse, a man who cannot walk arrives, and the crowd that came to hear Jesus is the exact reason he can't get to Jesus. Nobody in that room is the villain. They just filled every inch of space and never looked behind them.
Practice
Today, think about the rooms you're in: your small group, your row on Sunday, your lunch table, your group chat. Is there space in it for someone who isn't in yet? Pick one of those rooms and name the person who would have a hard time getting in. Then ask yourself what you personally would have to move to make room — a seat, an hour, a habit, a conversation.
Prayer
Jesus, I don't want to be part of a crowd that keeps people from You. Show me where I've gotten so comfortable that I've stopped looking behind me. Give me eyes for the person outside the door today, and make me willing to move so they can get in. Amen.
