Devotion
When a wound becomes an identity
“One man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years. - John 5:5 (CSB)”
Thirty-eight years. That is not a season. In the ancient world, that was longer than many people lived. John gives us the number because the number matters.
After thirty-eight years, the wound was no longer something the man had. It had become who he was. His spot by the pool, his routine, his answer when anybody asked about his life, all of it was built around the thing that hurt. Wounds do that. Given enough time, a hurt stops being an event in your story and starts being the plot. You can build a whole life around a wound and call it normal, because you cannot remember normal being anything else.
Prayer
Jesus, You know how long it has been. You know what I have built to live around this instead of bringing it to You. I do not want my wound to be my name anymore. Start pulling it apart, gently, and give me back what I have lost. Amen.
