Sermon Discussion Guide - When You Fall

The Story of David · July 5, 2026 · 2 Samuel 11:1-17

Big Idea

The sin you tolerate today is the sin that defeats you .

Small compromises create big

1 Peter 5:8; 2 Samuel 11:1; Deuteronomy 17:17

"Sin will take you further than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay, and keep you longer than you want to stay."

Sin grows when it’s not

"The frog and the slow boil (drifting). The danger of comfort is that it lowers the temperature so gradually you never feel the moment you should have jumped out. David didn't decide one day to commit adultery and murder; he decided, one comfortable evening, to stay home. Drift is always more dangerous than a blowout, because you never hear it coming."

Covering sin always multiplies

2 Samuel 11:2–5; 1 Corinthians 10:12-13; James 1:14-15

"You can't keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair." David let the bird build a nest. - Martin Luther"

"David's sin didn't start with Bathsheba in his bed; it started with Bathsheba in his mind." - Tim Keller"

2 Samuel 11:5-17

"Sin will take you further than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay, and keep you longer than you want to stay."
