The Story of David

Sermon Discussion Guide - Chosen in the Shadows

May 31, 2026 · 1 Samuel 16:1–13

Big Idea

God builds His plans with unlikely people.

Recap

This week we began The Story of David by watching God choose David in 1 Samuel 16. The sermon exposed how our world runs on the outward scoreboard, but the Lord looks at the heart. David was overlooked and “not even in the room,” yet God’s anointing landed on the one everyone counted out.

Connect

  • What’s a time you were picked last, overlooked, or underestimated? What did that do in you?
  • When you hear the phrase “the world’s scoreboard,” what comes to mind for you right now?

Check-In

  • Last week we talked about engaging the real enemy (Ephesians 6). Where did you notice temptation to treat a person like the enemy this week, and what did you do with it?
  • What is one way you practiced staying spiritually alert through prayer this past week?

Contemplate

  • Read 1 Samuel 16:1–13 (CSB).
  • What do you learn about what God is doing in verses 1–5? What stands out about how God leads Samuel forward while Samuel is still mourning?
  • In verses 6–7, what contrast does the Lord make between how humans see and how the Lord sees? What does that reveal about God’s priorities?
  • What do you notice about Jesse’s process of bringing sons forward (verses 8–11)? What does David’s absence from the lineup communicate?
  • When David arrives (verses 12–13), what details are highlighted, and what does the Lord emphasize? What happens when David is anointed?
  • The sermon contrasted Saul (impressive on the outside, half-obedient) and David (set-apart heart). Based on this text, what seems to matter most to God in a leader and in a disciple?
  • Additional passages (optional): 1 Samuel 15; Judges 21:25

Consider

  • Where do you feel pressure right now to “look the part” (spiritually, relationally, professionally, socially)? How is that pressure shaping you?
  • What is one area where you might be offering partial obedience to the Lord? What would full obedience look like?
  • What is one concrete action step you can take in the next 24 hours to yield your heart to the Lord (confess, apologize, delete an app, set a boundary, initiate a conversation, ask for help)?
  • Who is someone you tend to overlook or dismiss? What would it look like this week to see them with God’s eyes and treat them with honor?

Cover

  • Confess places where image, performance, or approval from others has mattered more than pleasing the Lord.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give a surrendered heart and to expose any areas of partial obedience.
  • Pray for the group to see people the way God sees them, and to notice and encourage the “hidden and overlooked.”

Practices

  • Name the scoreboard: This week, when you feel the pull to perform or impress, say out loud, “That’s the world’s scoreboard,” and ask God to re-center your heart.
  • Choose one full yes: Identify one area of partial obedience and take one specific step of full obedience (confess, reconcile, stop, start) this week.
  • Notice the overlooked: Encourage one “hidden” person (a note, text, or conversation) and tell them what you see God doing in them.
