You don’t have to prove your worth when you have Christ.
Looking Back
Use this time over the meal or at the beginning of the meeting as people catch up. Follow up on the action steps people shared last week, with encouragement and care.
Care
What has been on your mind most this week?
Following Up
Last week we talked about a life formed by Jesus shining for Jesus. What step did you take this past week in moving forward in your formation?
Who can share a story about how God helped you take that step?
If your group did not set a step last week, share one moment when you noticed God at work in you.
Looking Up
Invite the Holy Spirit
Before opening the Bible, invite the Holy Spirit to come, be present, and speak. The leader can pray in their own words, then invite two or three others to pray if they are willing. We expect God to speak as we listen to his Word.
Recap and Setting the Scene (read this to the group before you read the passage)
Paul writes to the church in Philippi from prison, encouraging them to rejoice in Jesus. In Philippians 3:1–11, he warns them against relying on religious achievements for their standing with God. Paul knows that temptation firsthand, but now he counts those achievements as loss compared with knowing Christ. His hope rests in the righteousness God gives through faith, and he wants to know Jesus in both resurrection power and suffering. We are invited to let go of what we rely on for worth and trust Christ.
Now read Philippians 3:1–11 aloud together twice, slowly. The first time, just listen. The second time, notice a word, phrase, or verse that stands out. Consider reading from different translations.
Highlight
What stands out?
Which word or verse stood out to you, and why?
Leader note: Give this question room. If the conversation is alive here, you may not need every Explain question.
Explain
What does it mean?
In verses 1–3, where does Paul say believers should put their confidence?
In verses 4–8, how does Paul view the things he once counted as gains?
In verses 9–11, what does Paul want to receive and experience through Christ?
Apply
What does it mean for me right now?
Give everyone a moment to process before answering. Anyone is welcome to pass.
Where do you feel pressure to prove your worth?
What achievement or approval are you tempted to lean on instead of Christ?
When have you experienced Jesus staying near you through a hard season?
Respond
What do I say back to God right now?
God offers us a right standing with him through faith in Christ. Take a quiet moment to respond.
What is one honest thing you want to say back to God tonight?
Additional passage: Matthew 13:45–46.
Looking Ahead
Training
Invite everyone to say or write privately one thing they are tempted to rely on for their worth. Give them a moment to consider a small step they could take in response. Nobody has to share, but this could be a powerful moment as people open up with one another.
Setting Goals
Invite each person, if ready, to write one step they can take before the group meets again. They do not have to read it aloud. If a full step feels hard, choose a smaller first step. Keep it somewhere visible, and remember it is okay to be at the beginning.
Example: This week I will set aside time to pray and hand my need for approval to Jesus.
Pray together
Share only what you are comfortable saying aloud.
Confess where you have looked to achievement or approval for your worth.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you take your next step toward knowing Jesus.
Pray for someone in the group who needs to experience Christ’s presence this week.
Leaders, keep praying for your group by name this week. Follow up privately with anyone who grew quiet.
