The Story of David

Sermon Discussion Guide - Faithful in the Wilderness

Big Idea

Recap

This week in The Story of David, we followed David into the wilderness of En-gedi, where Saul — the man hunting him — walked right into the cave where David was hiding (1 Samuel 24). David had a chance to end it all and seize the throne he'd been promised over a decade earlier. Instead, he refused the shortcut, spared Saul's life, and put his future back into God's hands. Big Idea: God has not forgotten you — God is preparing you.

Connect

  • Be honest: where in life are you the worst at waiting (traffic, lines, the microwave, slow texters)?
  • Who is someone you'd describe as a person of real integrity — and what is it about them that stands out to you?

Check-In

  • Looking back over the past week, where did you sense God at work — even in something small or ordinary?

Contemplate

  • Read 1 Samuel 24:1–7 together.
  • David's men interpret the moment in the cave as a clear sign from God (v.4). Why was that interpretation so tempting — and where did it go wrong?
  • After cutting Saul's robe, David's "conscience bothered him" (v.5). What does that reaction reveal about David's heart toward God?
  • We said in the message: providence is not permission. What's the difference between an open door and God's approval? Why is that distinction so important?
  • Read 1 Samuel 24:8–15.
  • Instead of taking revenge, David appeals to God as judge (v.12, 15). What does it look like to "let the Lord judge" in a situation where you've been wronged?
  • David had been carrying God's promise for 10–15 years with no throne in sight. How do you think that long wait shaped the man we see in this chapter?
  • Read Psalm 57 (written in this same season).
  • David moves from "I am surrounded by lions" (v.4) to "My heart is confident… I will sing" (v.7). What does this tell us about how worship works in the waiting, not just after it?

Consider

  • Where are you in a waiting season right now (healing, provision, reconciliation, a relationship, a calling, a decision)?
  • When the wait gets long, what's your version of "taking matters into your own hands"? Where are you tempted to grab control or grab a shortcut?
  • We said integrity matters more than opportunity. Where might you be tempted to win the moment but lose your character (work, money, reputation, relationships)?
  • David refused to harm Saul even when it seemed justified. Is there a grudge or a "justified" payback you need to release to God?
  • If the cave can be a sanctuary and not just isolation, what might God be trying to form in you through this season rather than rescue you from?

Cover

Pray together for:

  • Those in the group walking through a hard or hidden waiting season — that they'd know God hasn't forgotten them.
  • Courage to refuse shortcuts and keep our integrity, even when no one would know.
  • Hearts that worship in the waiting, trusting God's timing and God's justice.
  • Anyone tempted to give up — that they'd hold on and trust that the waiting is not wasted.
  • Father's Day: for the dads in our church to lead with faithfulness and integrity, and for those for whom today is tender — grief, distance, or longing — to feel the nearness of their Father in heaven.

Practices

Choose 1–3 for this week:

  • Release the outcome: Name one thing you've been gripping tightly. Write a short prayer this week: "Lord, I give you the timeline. I release the need to control."
  • Refuse the shortcut: Identify one area where you've been tempted to cut a corner that would cost your integrity — and choose the slower, faithful path instead.
  • Replace grasping with worship: Read Psalm 57 once a day this week. End each reading by thanking God for one thing the waiting is producing in you.
